Are you drinking enough water?

One question that I get a lot from my clients is--how much water should I be drinking?

The reality is that there is no hard, fast rule about how much water a person needs as well.

The amount of water you need to drink is entirely unique to your body. This will also vary day to day depending on your activity levels, diet, sodium consumption, and other things.

In general, the very best way to tell if you're getting enough water is to check the toilet first thing in the morning when you pee. That will tell you how well you hydrated yourself the night before.

So first thing in the morning, when you first go to the bathroom, check and see the color. Compare to the chart below:

It's so important to make sure that you're drinking enough water, and that you avoid dehydration. Especially if you're getting more active with a new training plan.

Our bodies need water for so many of its daily functions. Water is used for digestion, protecting our tissues & joints, and removing wastes.

Without enough water, you can become dehydrated, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and lethargy in mild cases. In more severe cases. Dehydration can lead to more serious complications such as low blood volume, seizures, kidney problems, and heat injuries (read more on MedicalNewsToday.com's website).

So the bottom line is--stay hydrated!

In addition to checking the color of your urine, be on the lookout for these other signs of dehydration:

  • Thirst

  • Dry mouth, dry nose

  • Fewer trips to the bathroom

  • Headache

  • Light-headedness

  • Muscle Cramps

  • Irritability/Confusion
